The world in which Haru is from is a world where anthropomorphic animals live in modern society. While there is a lot to this world that is similar to the modern human world we know, it is structured around carnivore and herbivore dynamics, where a tenuous civility is kept between species. meat eating is an extreme taboo in this society, all forms of it being illegal, but predation does still happen and there used to exist a "back alley market" where selling meat did occur.
• Haru had a very normal childhood for an herbivore. She has a mother, a father, brothers and sisters. She is the smallest of her siblings. Her parents emphasized the dangers of being a small dwarf rabbit, always cautioning her about the dangers of predators and the potentially short lifespan prey animals like her tend to have.
• Haru grew annoyed with the way animals would always (figuratively) look down at her and seem to pity her. Through her first relationship with a male student and onward, she discovers that sex is something that puts her on equal footing with other animals and is where they see her as an equal instead of something to be babied.
• Haru was not well-liked in school because of her sexually open ways. The male students primarily saw her as a sexual deviant who will either sleep with them whenever or try to seduce them. Female students despised and bullied her, spreading vicious rumours about her that exaggerated her openness to sex. in turn, haru started keeping to herself and was a bit of a loner which is strange for herbivores who tend to keep to large friend groups.
• haru likely suffers from a depersonalization disorder to some degree in order to cope with the fact that she is a prey animal & the fact that most prey animals in the beastars world are used to seeing themselves as potential predation victims. she works hard to build her individual identity and form relationships of equal footing with others, but she still suffers from an inferiority complex at times because she understands her physical weaknesses. she used to think of herself as one dwarf rabbit among thousands, nothing unique or special about her.
• Throughout the course of the manga, a lot happens to Haru after she encounters and befriends a grey wolf named Legosi. She is initially attacked by him when instincts take over, later befriends him, and following her kidnapping and rescuing from the lion yakuza known as the Shishigumi, her friendship and feelings for Legosi deepen into something more. she begins to fill out more as a strong and lively individual, becoming a bit more certain of her life and desire to live, and willing to take emotional challenges head on even if they hurt.

Personality

Haru is someone who is true to herself. As a small prey animal and the smallest of her siblings, Haru was raised under the knowledge that her life is almost always in danger, and that if the world isn't looking at her as someone to be eaten, it sees her to be someone to be pitied. And although she is someone who acknowledges that her fate in life is to be a prey animal, small and seen as weak to many, it is through this understanding that she chooses to live her life as nonchalantly and as freely as possible. If there's something that makes her feel good, she'll pursue it

Her nonchalance can come across to many as a deathwish of sorts; many predators seem to take notice how careless she seems to be, and how prone to accidents and dangerous situations she finds herself in. it can seem like Haru holds little regard for her own life, however this ultimately comes from a place of accepting that her life is always going to be in danger, and rather than to sweat the small stuff she just decides to let things happen as they play out. When in genuinely dangerous situation, Haru does indeed fear death, but her fear is not at the expense of her desire to live either. She just wants to enjoy herself and find happiness.

because Haru is someone who pursues things that make her feel good, it also means that she is someone who will try to avoid things that make her feel bad. While she's gotten much better at forming genuine relationships with others, Haru does have a defense mechanism where she keeps people at a distance. It's something that she still sometimes does out of habit, especially when something someone does comes across as shallow to her. she can and will speak her truths which comes across as mean spirited and thoughtless. And, although she is not the sort of person who holds grudges for very long, she does have a short-temper and is shown to be easily annoyed and quick to put someone down if they're bothering her.

Skills

She's got chutzpah but that's about it. All her abilities are based around her physiology of being a dwarf rabbit, both the good and the bad. She is a lover of plants and has a decent understanding of botany and horticulture. she is pursuing a botany degree at university.
